When the software company powering your utility billing goes dark, the clock starts ticking. For Iron City, TN Utility District, this became a reality when their legacy billing provider became unresponsive, leaving them with an aging system and a critical need for modernization.

While Iron City wasn’t quite ready to fully migrate to our flagship Water-Works platform, they faced a more immediate hurdle: their legacy software couldn’t communicate with their new hardware.

The Challenge: Cellular Data vs. Legacy Databases

The Utility had recently upgraded their meters to modern Badger Meters, provided by the team at Utility Solutions & Automation, LLC. These meters are a game-changer, using cellular service to provide precise, remote readings. However, getting those readings into a legacy system without manual entry is a "square peg, round hole" situation, especially when the original software vendor is no longer there to provide support.

The Solution: A Two-Way Integration Platform

Instead of forcing an immediate, total system overhaul, Iron Elephant Solutions built a custom integration platform to act as a digital translator between the new hardware and the old database.

  • Automated Meter-to-Billing: Our platform captures the reading files generated by the Badger cellular meters and automatically updates the Iron City legacy database.
  • Synchronized Records: The integration works in reverse, generating the necessary files from the local database to keep the Badger software perfectly synced.

Efficiency Without the Headache

By automating this data exchange, Iron City has eliminated the need for manual data entry, drastically reducing the risk of human error and saving hours of administrative labor every month.

This marks our second successful collaboration with Utility Solutions & Automation, LLC, proving that even when legacy software fails, the right integration can keep a utility district moving forward.
